In July, Oceans Alive were invited, along with the Kuruwitu-Beach Management Unit and Kuruwitu-CBO to attend a cocktail party aboard the HMS Lancaster on manoeuvres in the Indian Ocean and docked at Mombasa for a few days. It was an amazing experience for Des (CEO Oceans Alive) ,Tilda (Director Oceans Alive), Ali (Chairman Kuruwitu BMU) and Mariam (Chairlady Kuruwitu CBO) who saw a totally different aspect of marine protection. The armoury of the ship is particularly impressive and Tilda was given a tour of the offensive and defensive capacity of the ship and heard about how the Lancaster led two successful drug busts earlier this year where over £33 million of drugs were seized at sea.
Lancaster Commander, Chris Sharp, and deputy British High Commissioner, Leigh Stubblefield welcomed the team from Kuruwitu and heard about how Oceans Alive, K-BMU and the K-CBO are also working together to protect the sea.
